Product Description

Product Feature:

The Distal Femoral Compression Plate (DFCP) is designed specifically for fractures of the distal femur in dogs and cats. It provides stable fixation in a challenging anatomic region where conventional plates may not fit well.

1 Preoperative Planning

Imaging: Obtain craniocaudal (CrCd) and mediolateral (ML) radiographs to assess fracture configuration.

Plate Selection: Choose a pre-contoured distal femoral plate (left/right specific). Ensure at least 3-4 bicortical screws in the proximal fragment.

Screw Selection: Cortical screws for compression; Locking screws for added stability in osteoporotic bone.

2 Patient Positioning & Surgical Approach

Positioning: Lateral recumbency (affected limb up). Flex the stifle to relax the quadriceps.

Approach: Lateral parapatellar approach. Reflect the biceps femoris caudally and the quadriceps cranially. Avoid damaging the femoropatellar joint and lateral genicular vessels.

3 Fracture Reduction

Use reduction forceps or temporary K-wires to align fragments. Restore femoral condyle alignment and ensure proper patellar tracking.

4 Plate Application

Position the plate laterally along the distal femur. The condylar portion should sit flush against the lateral femoral condyle.

Screw Insertion: Insert the first screw in neutral position. Use the compression screw (eccentric drilling) in the DCU hole closest to the fracture. Tightening will compress the fracture. Use short, thick screws in the condylar segment.

5 Final Assessment

Check alignment to ensure no rotational deformity. Verify that the fracture line is closed and ensure no intra-articular screw penetration.

6 Closure

Layered closure reattaching fascia and muscle. A light bandage may be applied for 24-48 hrs.

Postoperative Care
  • Activity restriction: Strict confinement for 4-6 weeks.
  • Follow-up radiographs: At 2, 6, and 12 weeks to monitor healing.
  • Physical therapy: Passive range-of-motion exercises to prevent stifle stiffness.
